Crucial/Micron have recently announced their new portable SSD for consumers, named the X8. It will be utilizing the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface for data transfer, instead of the faster Thunderbolt 3.

The theoretical bandwidth of the interface is at 10 Gbps or around 1250 MB/s. The X8, which is essentially a Crucial P1 M.2 SSD with a NVMe to USB bridge chip, can reach maximum sequential read/write speeds of 1050 MB/s. A single USB cable will handle both power and data. It is available in two different capacities, 500 GB and 1 TB. It will be compatible with most devices and platforms, such as Windows, MacOS and Android.

The X8’s enclosure is tested to survive drops of up to 7.5 feet (about 2.286 meters), as well as being temperature-proof, shock-proof, and vibration-proof. The SSD is backed up by a 3-year warranty.

The Crucial X8 will be priced at $119.95 USD for the 500 GB model, and $164.95 USD for 1 TB. You can purchase them on Crucial’s online store now.
