Along with the Mac Pro, Apple also announces the new Pro Display XDR during the WWDC 2019 event. This will be the first Apple-branded display after they discontinued the 27-inch Thunderbolt Cinema display in 2016. Though, Apple partnered with LG to make the existing UltraFine 4K and 5K displays.

The Pro Display XDR has a 32-inch 6K LCD display with a resolution of 6016×3384, which supports wide DCI-P3 color gamuts and 10-bit color. The display has an average brightness at 1000 nits, and can peak at up to 1600 nits. Combined with full array local dimming, it has a impressive 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which is certainly helpful for consuming or editing HDR content.

Apple also designs a Pro stand, that offers the display both tilt and height adjustments. The Pro Display XDR can also use other VESA-compatible stands or mounts.

The Pro Display XDR is priced at $4999 USD (MSRP) without including the stand. The Pro stand will cost you another $999 USD.

Apple Introduces New Redesigned Mac Pro

Apple has been staying on the “trash can” Mac Pro since 2013 with outdated hardware. They promised to release a more configurable and upgradable Mac Pro in 2017. Now in WWDC 2019, Apple finally introduces the long-waited “modular” Mac Pro for professional users.

The new Mac Pro has a completely new exterior design, which is built around a stainless-steel frame with an aluminum external enclosure. It has the unique lattice structure on both front and back, which Apple claims to optimize airflow and maintain structural rigidity. The stainless-steel frame act as both the case feet and handles. Like a normal PC tower, you get I/O ports on the top and back.

For performance, the Mac Pro can be equipped with an Intel Xeon processor with up to 28 cores and 56 threads. You can pair the system with up to 1.5 TB of six-channel DDR4 ECC RAM running at 2933 MHz, as well as two 2 TB SSDs (total 4 TB). The most basic Mac Pro will have an AMD Radeon Pro 580X GPU for graphics. Apple debuts a new Mac Pro Expansion Module, which includes up to two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II GPUs integrated with Thunderbolt 3. Each MPX Module can have 64 GB of HBM2 memory and provide 28.2 teraflops of compute power. Each Mac Pro can install two MPX modules.

The Mac Pro is designed to be easily upgradable. It has a double-sided motherboard, with 12 user-accessible DIMM slots and 8 PCI Express expansion slots. Three fans at the front and a blower fan on the side are responsible for moving hot air away from the case. The internal power supply can provide a maximum of 1400 watts.

Apple also introduces the Pro Display XDR and a dedicated ASIC card for video editing, called Afterburner. The base model Mac Pro will cost $5999 USD (MSRP), and start shipping later this fall.

AMD AM4 Motherboards Before X570 Will Not Support PCIe 4.0

Before the launch of the 3rd Generation Ryzen processors and X570 motherboards, AMD suggested older AM4 motherboards can receive a BIOS update to enable support for PCIe 4.0. Now, AMD has apparently cut the support for 400 and 300 series AM4 motherboards, which is later confirmed on a thread at Reddit.

Ryzen 3000 series processors will have up to 40 PCIe 4.0 lanes, if paired with a X570 motherboard. Previously, AMD and motherboard manufacturers had worked on making the top PCIe x16 slot and M.2 slot to support PCIe 4.0 for older AM4 motherboards. GIGABYTE has already released the new F40 BIOS to enable the features on their X470 and B450 motherboards.

However, the specifications on AMD’s website show only X570 chipset will have official support for PCIe 4.0. It also clearly states that the PCIe 4.0 functionality will not be backward compatible with old chipsets.

The comment in the r/AMD Reddit thread confirms the findings, saying that AMD cannot guarantee older motherboards to meet the signalling requirements of the PCIe 4.0 standard.
