Google Drive Desktop App Is Going to Be Replaced in March 2018

Google Drive Desktop App replaced by Backup and Sync

Online cloud storage has become increasingly popular among people, for storing and sharing photos and documents. Google Drive is one of the most used cloud storage services. With its existing desktop application, you can directly upload files to Google Drive from the computers’ local storage, no need to use the web browsers. However, the current Google Drive desktop app will be replaced in March 2018.

.
.
.
According to Google, no support will be provided to the Google Drive desktop app on 11 December 2017, and it will be closed on 12 March 2018. Please note that any other Google Drive related services are still available for use, including the mobile applications. Don’t worry. In fact, Google is just replacing the original app with a “new” app (Backup and Sync).

Back in July 2017, Google introduced the new desktop app, called Backup and Sync. It will be combining both Google Drive and Google Photo. You can access and upload files like the original one, but with added Google Photo service. You can have unlimited photo storage for free as usual, if you choose to upload in high quality setting (slightly compressed), instead of original quality.  Also, it will automatically sync your specified folders to Google Drive, that can use through other devices.

Google will start notifying users of the desktop app in October 2017. Enterprise users will switch over to the other app, Drive File Stream, with better teams and organizations support. Google will only allow you to install one app, “Backup and Sync” or “Drive File Stream”. You can find a detailed comparison between the two apps from Google.

Unboxing of LG Q6 Plus Smartphone

LG Q6 Plus Unboxing

Finally, the LG Q6 series mid-range smartphones are released in other countries, not only in Korea. The first non-flagship phone from LG to feature the 18:9 FullVision display. The Q6 is a reasonably compact phone with a big 5.5-inch screen. Let’s unbox the LG Q6+ to see what is inside the packaging.

Specifications

LG Q6 Plus Unboxing

Most of the specifications among the three models in the Q6 lineup are identical, such as screen size, battery capacity and camera. The differences are in the RAM and storage size, as well as colour options. All of them are running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and are expected to update to Android 8.0 Oreo (not confirmed).

Unboxing

LG Q6 Plus Unboxing

The packaging of the LG Q6+ feel pretty high quality with a black hard cardboard box. The front has nothing except a Q6+ logo in the center, while the back highlights three of the phone’s features, including the 5.5-inch FHD+ (2160×1080 in resolution) 18:9 FullVision display, the 3000 mAh battery and the 5 megapixel wide angle front-facing camera.

LG Q6 Plus Unboxing

The sides of the box do not show much information. On one side, the phone’s model number, serial number, IMEI number, as well as the storage capacity are clearly presented. The quote “Life’s Good When You Play More” is printed on the other side, which was introduced by LG when launching the G5 in 2016.

LG Q6 Plus Unboxing

Once you open the box, the LG Q6+ will be covered by a LG-branded microfiber cleaning cloth. The phone is wrapped neatly in plastic. Under the phone are all the accessories and paperwork.

You will get the Warranty Card, a Quick Start Guide and a SIM ejection tool.

A micro-USB cable and a power adapter (UK plug) are included. The power adapter can accept input voltage of 100 V to 240 V and output of 5.0 V and 1.2 A (6 Watts). In the box, there is also a pair of generic earphones.

LG Q6+

The Q6+ has a full glass front and a plastic back panel, with an aluminum midframe. The back panel has a glossy finish that mimicking real metal’s texture, and it cannot be removed. The phone’s speaker unit is located at the back.

When comparing with the Apple’s iPhone 6, the LG Q6+ looks far more innovative in design (smaller bezels). Both two phones have a similar physical dimensions (height: ~140mm width: ~70mm), but the LG Q6+ has a 5.5-inch display while the iPhone 6’s is only 4.7-inch. The Q6+ is way more compact and has more usable screen space, even with the on-screen controls.

Overall, the LG Q6+ has a very decent packaging and unboxing experience. You will have everything you need to get going inside the box.

YouTube-MP3.org Is Going to Shut Down Indefinitely

Screen Capture from YouTube-MP3.org

According to TorrentFreak, the very popular YouTube-to-mp3 conversion site, YouTube-MP3.org is going to shut down because of the copyright infringement lawsuit last year (2016). It is one of the most visited websites in the world, but at the same time causing more piracy problems.

YouTube-MP3.org is used for downloading MP3 sound files converted from YouTube videos. You only need to copy and paste the YouTube videos’ links to the website. The MP3 file will then be able to download within a few minutes. People mainly use the website to download songs from music videos in YouTube.

The music industry thinks YouTube-MP3.org illegally uses their copyrighted music to generate its advertisement income from the website’s visitors, as well as affecting their music sales. Multiple major record companies, representing by RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), sued the website last year. They said that YouTube-MP3.org causes $150,000 USD of damage for each proven copyright infringed song, including Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Zedd’s “Clarity”.

Now, YouTube-MP3.org has reached an agreement with the RIAA (and the record companies) about the lawsuit. It will need to shut down the website, hand over the domain to the RIAA and give an unknown amount of money payment.

Currently, YouTube-MP3.org is still online, but you will not be able to convert videos anymore. An error of “We are sorry, this service is not available from your jurisdiction.” will appear.

Update:
The website is offline now.

Backblaze Released Their Hard Drive Statistic for Q2 2017

Backblaze Hard Drive Stats for Q2 2017
Photo from Backblaze

Backblaze is a cloud data storage/backup provider, that was founded in 2007. They deal with tons of hard drives every day, therefore, they will release their hard drive statistics (drive count and failure rate) each quarter. Recently, they released the latest stats for Q2 2017.

.
.
.
According to Backblaze, they only added about 600 new hard drives in this Q2, compared to over 10,000 drives in the previous quarter. The reason was that they were retiring old lower density hard drives with newer higher capacity drives (replacing 3TB drives with 8TB drives).

All 17 models in the report are 3.5-inch hard drives, from 3TB up to 8TB in size. Toshiba‘s hard drives did pretty well with 0% failure rate, but there are only 231 drives used, which is relatively small comparing to at least 1,000 drives for other brands. Two of the Western Digital hard drive models also operate without any failure, with the 3TB model having a failure rate of 1.21%. HGST hard drives perform good with a 0.15% to 0.55% failure rate across all models. However, Seagate has two of its 4TB hard drive models going up to over 30%, the ST4000DM001 and ST4000DX000.

Backblaze Hard Drive Stats for Q2 2017

Backblaze also provides cumulative hard drive statistics from April 2013 to June 2017. As we can see, most of the hard drives have an average failure rate of about 1% to 3%. Higher capacity hard drives (5TB to 8TB) have a relatively lower rate.

How to Watch Apple’s Event Live Stream on September 12

Apple Special Event on September 12,2017
Screen Capture from Apple

Finally, Apple officially invites press and media to their event on September 12, identical to previous rumor. In the event, it is expected to launch the new generation iPhones, 4K Apple TV (rumored) and the HomePod. Of course, like previous Apple’s events, this event will also be live streamed. But, how and where can you watch it?

.
.
.
From Apple:

Requirements: …HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation).

Apple uses HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) to live stream its events. Not all devices and web browsers support this live streaming protocol.

Most Apple devices will be able to watch the live stream out of the box. iOS devices with iOS 7.0 or up, including iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, can watch using Safari. Mac computers will need to have the macOS updated to OS X v10.8.5 or higher before watching the live stream using Safari. Apple TVs are also supported, but older generations (2nd & 3rd gen) will need to update the software to version 6.2.

For quite a long time, PC users will not be able to watch the HLS live streams. This situation changed when Microsoft released Windows 10 along with its new Edge web browser, which supports HLS protocol. You can now use Microsoft Edge the live streams of Apple’s events on a PC. However, other popular web browsers, such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, are still not supported.

If you do not have a compatible device on hand, you can stay up-to-date with the event by reading our Liveblog on September 12, which will be constantly updating. Stay tuned!

WhatsApp Introduces Verified Business Accounts

WhatsApp Verified Business Accounts
Photo from WhatsApp

It is very common for businesses nowadays to maintain multiple communication channels between customers. WhatsApp becomes one of the most popular instant messaging applications, with over one billion users every day. Businesses also start using WhatsApp for customer services. However, they are only using normal numbers that are not designed for this. Recently, WhatsApp is testing to implement verified business accounts, with some slight tweaks than ordinary accounts.

.
.
.

Differences

WhatsApp will be putting a green badge/tick next to the verified business accounts’ names, similar to those blue verified badges/ticks in Facebook and Instagram. This will let users to identify the business accounts.

You can do the exact same things like normal WhatsApp chats, using text, photos and voice messages. The only visual difference is the messages sent by business accounts will be colored in in yellow, instead of the original white chat bubble. Moreover, all messages (both you and the businesses) cannot be deleted. WhatsApp will notify users about that before they start the chats.

You will see your preset names of the businesses, if you have already saved their phone numbers in the contact/address book. Otherwise, WhatsApp will display the businesses’ own chosen names. Also, you can choose to block any message from businesses, if you think they are annoying.

WhatsApp is now limiting to a small amount of businesses for testing.

Another Source of Income?

Although WhatsApp is one of the largest instant messaging company in the world, it did not work very well to monetize. It tried to charge for subscription fees at first, after giving users one year of free trial, but stopped at the end. The verified business accounts may generate WhatsApp a decent amount of  profit, maybe by charging fees from businesses, if enough users are adopting it. Businesses can allow customers to not only communicate, but also make reservation, check real-time flight information, and much more.

Update: Whatsapp Business App is now available.
