After two years, the Raspberry Pi Foundation finally refreshed its single-board computers lineup with the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. It will be the slightly upgraded version of the original Model B, with improved performance and connectivity.

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ is now equipped with a 1.4 GHz Broadcom BCM2837B0 SoC with 1GB RAM. The SoC has a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex A53 CPU and is clocked 200 MHz higher than the Model B’s, but is paired with the same amount of RAM.

The main upgrade of the Model B+ is the connectivity side. It now has dual-band 802.11 ac Wi-Fi (2 GHz and 5 GHz support) for the first time, as well as Bluetooth 4.2 and Gigabit Ethernet (maximum throughput 300 Mbps, limited by the USB 2.0 speed). The 40-pin GPIO header, full-size HDMI port and four USB 2.0 ports remain identical to previous versions.

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ will be on sale for $35 USD (MSRP) on approved sellers. Due to the increased power consumption, the company do recommend a 5V/2.5A DC power input, instead of the usual 5V/2.1A.

You can purchase the Pi 3 Model B+ at our own merch store.

Intel Releases The More Affordable Optane 800p Series SSDs

Intel Optane 800p series SSD

Last year (2017), Intel introduced the Optane memory and solid-state drives for data centers, using the 3D XPoint technology. At that time, normal consumers are stuck with smaller storage capacity of up to only 32GB, and is not user-accessible. This type of Optane memory is more suitable and effective when combining with an traditional spinning hard drive (Optane + HDD). Now, Intel is announcing the release of a consumer-grade Optane SSD in a more affordable price finally.

The new consumer-oriented Optane SSD is named the 800p series. There are two capacities in the series, 58GB and 118GB. Unlike the Optane memory, the 800p SSD can not only be used as a system cache to assist slow HDDs, but also act as standalone drive in the operating system.

For performance, the 800p SSD can achieve sequential read speed at 1450 MB/s and write speed at 650 MB/s, running in an NVMe PCIe 3.0×2 interface. This may not sound impressive for an NVMe SSD these days, but the 800p should show its power in terms of lower latency (7 µs to 18 µs) and better durability (365 TBW), thanks to the 3D XPoint memory technology.

The Optane 800p SSD will cost $129.99 USD for the 58GB model and $199.99 USD for 118GB. The SSD will only come in the M.2 2280 form factor. For more information, you can visit its product page or check out Intel’s press release.

Additionally, NVIDIA said users would also see performance gain in PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS with the new 390.01 driver. In their internal testing, three screen resolutions are included (1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3824×2160). The lowest increase is at 3% for the GTX 1080 in 1080p, but a high of 7% is recorded in multiple cards. Other cards also see improvements at around 5%.

NVIDIA only tested on the GTX 10-series grahpics cards, from GTX 1050 to GTX 1080 Ti. For reference, the test system featured an Intel Core [email protected] with 32GB DDR4 memory on Windows 10 OS. Please be reminded that the above benchmarks were performed by NVIDIA.

According to NVIDIA’s release note for the driver, the following issues/bugs have been fixed.

  • [BeamNG]: Dynamic reflections flicker in the game.
  • [Call of Duty WWII]: Flickering shadows occur in the game.
  • NvfbcPluginWindow prevents Windows from shutting down.

It has been a great year in 2017 for AMD Ryzen CPUs to regain part of the market share back from Intel. AMD is expected to launch the Ryzen 2000 series processors, codenamed Pinnacle Ridge in Q2 2018. There are still months away from the official unveiling of the new processors, but recently Ryzen 5 2600’s benchmark score was leaked on Geekbench.

All Pinnacle Ridge CPUs will be using the refined 12 nm Zen+ microarchitecture. According to the benchmark, the Ryzen 5 2600 is retaining the 6-core, 12-thread structure with 3 MB of L2 cache and 32 MB of L3 cache. The processor has a base clock of 3.40 GHz, and a possible boost clock of 3.80 GHz. It got 4269 in single-core score, and 20102 in multi-core score. When compared with its older brother, Ryzen 5 1600, the 2600 scored approximately 10% higher in single-core and 15% better in multi-core performance.

This particular benchmarking system was using the AMD Myrtle platform, with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview. There are still some time for AMD to optimize the new Ryzen processors, this leaked benchmark may not accurately represent the performance of the Ryzen 5 2600.

Apple’s Larger 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus Screen Was Leaked

Apple iPhone X Plus Screen
Photo from MacX Forum

Soon after the launch of the iPhone X in September 2017, there were already rumors about Apple bringing the full-screen bezel-less screen to two more models of iPhone. One is essentially a plus version of the current iPhone X, but with a larger 6.5-inch OLED display. The other one is a slightly more budget-friendly iPhone with a 6.1-inch LCD display. Now, there is a photo appeared on the Internet, claiming to be the iPhone X Plus’s display assembly.

We have no ways to confirm the authenticity of the leaked photo. According to the original poster on the forum, that iPhone’s component is from the test run of the production equipments at LG’s factories in Vietnam. LG is rumoured to be one of the OLED display suppliers for future Apple iPhones, while Samsung is currently the exclusive supplier.

In the photo, the screen appears to be much wider and taller than a 5.8-inch iPhone X, comparing to the person’s hand. If it is real, that would most likely be the 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus. At the bottom of the display, there are some ribbon cables/connectors with tiny text/model numbers printed on top.

The Z150 speakers is finished in a matte black plastic. Most of the functionalities are located in the right speaker. At the front, there are the power/volume adjustment knob and a green power LED above it. The knob makes changing the volume extremely easy and convenient. You can also find the headphone and microphone input/output ports.

Again, on the back of the right speaker, there are the power input port and the 3.5 mm audio connector (that you need to connect to the audio source). A extra cable is connected between both the right and left speakers for signal transfer.

You will find some anti-slip rubber feet on the bottom of both speakers.

Conclusion

To be honest, I am no audio expert. For the Logitech Z150 speakers‘ entry-level price and small size, it can produce a very decent sound with adequate volume and little distortion. The speakers perform relatively good in mids and highs, the lack of bass is very prominent. That said, the Z150 speakers is certainly an improvement over most laptops or monitors’ built-in speakers.

Microsoft Will Stop Supporting Push Notification for Windows Phone 7 And 8

Microsoft Windows PhonePhoto from Microsoft

In October 2017, Microsoft announced that they would stop developing new features and hardware for the Windows Phone anymore, and shift their focus on mobile applications. Now, Microsoft will soon drop support for the push notification services for Windows Phone 7 and 8 on 20 February 2018.

According to Microsoft, once the services is shut down, existing users will not be able to receive any notifications. Not only that, additional live tile updates will not be available. You can no longer be able to locate your Windows Phone using the “Find my phone” feature. Microsoft says Windows Phone 7.5 to 8.0’s services will discontinue over time, but Windows Phone 8.1 and 10 will remain fully supported.

Push notifications and updates require the company to maintain the operations of backend servers. It is clear that Microsoft is slowly phasing out older versions of Windows Phone to reduce operation costs.
