Razer’s First Smartphone Is Rumored to Have 8GB of RAM

Just after Razer’s announcement of the upcoming November event, the specifications of the long-waited Razer smartphone were leaked. There are still about three weeks before the launch event officially reveals the phone. Let’s take a look at the possible hardware the smartphone will get.

According to Phone Radar, they found a GFXBench (a benchmarking software) result that is called “Razer Phone”. The phone is running on a octa-core CPU at 2.4 GHz, Adreno 540 GPU. This means it is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, because of the integrated GPU model. The Razer Phone has 8GB of RAM onboard, which is at similar capacity as most laptops’ entry configuration. Surprisingly, the phone seems to have a regular 16:9 aspect ratio display at 5.7 inches. The resolution is at 2560×1440 and a pixel density of 515 ppi.

The cameras’ specifications are also listed on GFXBench. The real camera features a 12.2-megapixel sensor and can take up to 4K (3840×2160) videos. A 8-megapixel front-facing camera is available as well.

The Razer Phone is operating on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, probably with Razer’s skins on it. Apart from the 8GB of RAM, it does not have much differences between other flagship Android devices in the market, in terms of the hardware specifications. It gets the same 835 SoC, 5.7-inch 2K display and unexceptional cameras (specs). Maybe Razer will be doing something special in the software side, but it will have a hard time standing out from the crowd, if the phone cannot wow/impress everyone.

Razer unveiling its smartphone on 1 November

In January 2017, the PC gaming laptop and peripheral manufacturer, Razer bought a smartphone startup, Nextbit. At that time, Nextbit had only designed and produced one model of smartphone, called the Nextbit Robin. The phone aimed to store almost everything to the cloud, including unused applications. The rumors of Razer creating a gaming-oriented smartphone never stop after the acquisition. Now, Razer teases us its next big move, maybe to the mobile industry.

On both Razer’s official website and its Twitter page, a picture of a man holding an unknown mobile device is posted. Behind the man are seemingly some screenshots of videos or games. Razer calls it their biggest unveiling on 1 November. Apart from the photo, there is not much information given about the upcoming launch event.

As Razer is known for its high-end gaming laptop (Razer Blade) and other gaming accessories, we can expect the smartphone to have some kinds of unique gaming-related features. A higher refresh rate display? A touch pad on the back? Physical buttons? What I am pretty sure about is the black and green color scheme on the device. Currently, the smartphone industry is crowded with well-established companies, such as Apple and Google. Can Razer get in and have a slice of this cake?

Over 37,000 People Installed The Fake AdBlock Plus Google Chrome Extension

Fake AdBlock Plus on Google Chrome Extension

Ad blocking software or browser extensions are popular among tons of people to stop annoying advertisements on websites. AdBlock Plus is one of the most downloaded Ad blocking Google Chrome extension, with about100 million users. It is developed by adblockplus.org. However, someone discovered that a fake AdBlock Plus extension is up on the Chrome web store. Over 37,000 people had installed the extension on their devices.

A Twitter user, named SwiftOnSecurity, posted a photo of the fake extension on the web store. The extension used the same name as the legit one (“AdBlock Plus”), but the developer’s name is incorrect. According to the photo, about 37,477 people downloaded this malicious extension. There is no information about what the extension would do/affect. Currently, it is no longer listed on the Chrome web store.

It is especially concerning for Google to allow random software/extension to get on the Chrome web store, where billions of users are relying on Google to ensure the safety of all software. Just changing/copying the name of a legitimate extension is enough for anyone to compromise Google’s security. In fact, it is not the first time similar incident happens. An attacker titled its extension as “Google Docs”, and enabled him to gain permission to access users’ Gmail and address book.

Google should immediately deal with this important security problem, stopping incidents like these to occur again in the future.

First Touchscreen Smartphone from BlackBerry, After TCL’s Partnership

Back in 2016, BlackBerry signed a deal about licensing its phone brand to TCL, which BlackBerry will no longer design/manufacture/sell any phones. It will only focus on its software and services. Therefore, basically every phone you see with BlackBerry’s name on after 2016 is coming from TCL. We saw the BlackBerry KEYone coming out not too long ago. Now, the first all-touchscreen smartphone, after the BlackBerry-TCL agreement, is launched at GITEX Technology Week in Dubai, called BlackBerry Motion.

The BlackBerry Motion has a lot of similarity with its sibling, the KEYone. Gone is the old style, iconic physical QWERTY keyboard, replaced by the new 5.5-inch touchscreen display. The overall look of the Motion is almost identical to the KEYone, having the same textured outer shell and camera placement.

The Motion is not equipped with flagship hardware either. It gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, along with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It has a rather large 4000 mAh battery inside. The display is at 5.5 inches at a resolution of 1920×1080 and 16:9 aspect ratio. It will be targeted as a mid-range smartphone in the market.

Other features of the BlackBerry Motion:

fingerprint sensor
12-megapixel main camera, with f/2.0 aperture
8-megapixel front-facing camera
Android 7.1 with additional BlackBerry security software

The BlackBerry Motion will be available in Middle Eastern countries, such as UAE and Saudi Arabia. No information about when it will come to other areas. It is priced at the about $460 USD.

In the world of smartphones, the first thing you would consider if you are going to purchase a new phone is probably the operating system and its ecosystem. Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android? But “unfortunately”, there will soon be one less mobile operating system in the market for you to choose. According to a tweet from Joe Belfiore, only small patches and security updates will be provided to the Windows Phone platform.

On 8 Oct, Joe Belfiore (Corporate Vice President at Microsoft) posted a tweet about the future development of Microsoft’s mobile operating system. Surprisingly, he confirmed that the mobile OS (Windows 10 Mobile), including both software and hardware, is not the main focus now for Microsoft.

Joe Belfiore assured current users that Microsoft will continue to offer them bug fixes and security updates, but no new features will be added in the near future.

According to other tweets and replies from Joe Belfiore, we know that Microsoft was having really big issues in attracting enough numbers of software developers to write applications specific for the OS. The amount of available apps is negligible comparing to Apple’s (iOS) and Google’s (Android), although they even tried to pay developers to code for them.

The lack of hardware and software makes the installed base of apps too little, that no more companies are willing to invest in Windows Phone. Microsoft will start focusing on iOS (19%) and Android (74%), that the two platforms contain over 90% of market share in the world.

At this point, Microsoft has released their iOS and Android versions of Edge browser, as well as the Microsoft Launcher. They will be Microsoft’s new approach to the mobile industry.

Untouched Photo and Video Samples of Google Pixel 2 Are Available Now

On 4 October, Google announced their next generation Pixel devices, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. The two smartphones are equipped with top-of-the-line hardware in current market, such as Snapdragon 835 SoC and 18:9 full-screen OLED display. At the launch event, Google claimed that the new Pixel 2/2 XL have the best smartphone camera in the world. DxOMark gives the camera a record-breaking 98 marks, surpassing the old champion, Apple iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (94 marks). Now, Google released the unedited photo and video samples to the public.

The Google Pixel 2 is the top-performing mobile device camera we’ve tested… it manages this despite having “only” a single-camera design for its main camera.

Both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have the same 12.2-megapixel main camera. The camera has a f/1.8 aperture and a pixel size of 1.4 μm. It is paired with laser and phase detection autofocus, as well as optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (EIS).

Recently, Google posted a total of 36 photos and videos taken using the new Pixel 2. According to one of Google’s product manager, those samples are in their original form (unedited), except for the two videos comparing different modes of video stabilization. The photos were shot in various lighting conditions, from simple bright light to strange neon light. All the samples look astonishing and pretty promising. The camera of the new Pixel 2/ 2 XL seems to be one of the best in the industry, if it can consistently performing as great.

How to Fast Charge Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone X

Update: Apple still does not include a fast charger inside the new iPhone XS, and XS Max. Apple’s 29W adapter has updated to 30W.

Back when Apple launched their major overhauled design (a larger display) with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2014, Apple already enabled some form of fast-charging on their smartphones. It allows the iPhones to charge up the battery quicker than normal 5W USB charger. For the latest iPhone 8/8 Plus and the iPhone X, Apple decided to implement fast-charging with USB Power Delivery (PD). But Apple does not include the required charger in the package. How can you use this feature?

You can use a higher power 10W/12W iPad charger to charge your iPhone since the iPhone 6, but Apple does not officially support or promote it. Newer iOS devices, such as iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad Pro, are fast-charge capable (USB-PD), according to the technical specifications from Apple. However, there is only a standard 5W charger included in the box.

How to do?

Apple released a support article about the instructions and requirements of fast charging the new iPhone recently. You can get up to 50% of battery in 30 minutes using fast-charging, but you will need both a correct cable and power adapter.

You have two options when choosing the power adapter, directly from Apple or third-party manufacturers.

Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter (or from Apple) (its review here)
Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter (or from Apple)
Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter (or from Apple)
Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter (or from Apple)
Third-party USB-C power adapters with USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) support

For the charging cable, Apple recommends using their own first-party USB-C to Lightning cable.

If you use all Apple’s accessories for fast-charging, it will cost you a lot of money. The 29W adapter is sold at $49 USD (MSRP), and the 1 meter cable at $25 USD (MSRP). It will cost you at least $74 USD, or more if you need a longer cable. It will be reasonable to go with first-party accessories if you already own a relatively new Macbook/Macbook Pro that uses USB-C charger.

Fortunately, you can use a third-party power adapter that support USB-PD specifications. A decent, reliable charger at about 30W will cost slightly more than $20 USD. However, please do not purchase or use some non-reputable brands/manufacturers, which may damage your iPhones’ batteries.
